Braces FAQ

It starts with a smile

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics (also referred to as dentofacial orthopedics) is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial abnormalities.

Who is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received two to three years of additional training and experience. Our doctors, Dr. Brent Rickheim and Dr. Brendan Smith, can straighten teeth, correct misaligned jaw structure, and improve the function of your smile.

What’s the best age to visit the orthodontist?

If you want to improve the look and feel of your smile, then any age can be a great age to see an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of seven; however, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about one in every five orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you are considering treatment for yourself or for a child, any time is a good time to visit the orthodontist.

How can I take care of my teeth if I’m wearing braces or a retainer?

  • ALWAYS remember to brush your teeth after every meal and floss at least once a day.
  • Make sure to use toothpaste that contains fluoride and ask our orthodontist or your family dentist if you need a fluoride rinse. This will help prevent cavities!
  • If you take out your retainer to eat, make sure you brush and floss your teeth after you are done eating. Also, remember to keep your retainer safe in its container so that it does not get lost or broken.
  • Keep your retainer clean by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may also soak it in denture cleaner as instructed by our orthodontist. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher.
  • During your treatment, try to avoid foods with a lot of sugar, which increases the number of bacteria that grow in your mouth and causes more plaque and possibly cavities.
  • Avoid sticky and chewy foods (caramel, chewing gum, gummy bears), hard foods (hard candy, nuts, ice cubes), or any foods that could possibly get stuck in your braces (corn on the cob, soft bagels, ribs, taffy, etc.).
  • Be sure to schedule your routine checkups with your family dentist every six months.

What are braces?

Peach Orthodontics uses braces to help you improve the look and feel of your smile. There are several different types of braces to choose from, including:

  • Clear braces
  • Ceramic braces
  • Lingual braces
  • Self-ligating braces
  • Invisible braces
  • Traditional metal braces

If I get braces, how long do I have to wear them?

The amount of time spent in braces will vary depending on the individual because every smile responds differently to treatment. Treatment times can take anywhere between six and 30 months, but most standard treatments take about 22 months.

Do braces hurt?

Braces do not often hurt, although you may feel a small amount of discomfort for a couple of days as your teeth, gums, cheeks, and mouth get used to your new braces.

Do I need to brush my teeth more often if I have braces?

With braces, you should brush your teeth at least three times a day to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy and clean. Brushing regularly will help remove any food that may be caught between the braces. You should also floss daily to get in between your braces, where your brush cannot reach. Our team can show you how to properly brush and floss once your braces are placed.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! In fact, it is even more important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush cannot reach. This causes bacteria to build up, which can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Your dentist will work closely with our orthodontist to make sure your teeth stay clean and healthy while wearing braces.

Will my braces interfere with my school activities, like sports, playing an instrument, or singing?

Playing an instrument or a contact sport may require some adjustment when you first get your braces but wearing braces will not stop you from participating in any of your school activities. If you play a contact sport, we recommend that you wear a mouthguard to protect your braces or appliance.

How do I schedule my next appointment?

Peach Orthodontics in Post Falls is definitely where you want to go for your kids braces!! We setup consultations for both of my kids and from the initial phone call, the office staff were great! They made everything so easy. We were able to get both consultation appointments scheduled so we could do them at the same time. Janeen was so helpful and explained everything that was recommended for treatment for both kids, explained the various financial options and never made me feel pressured or rushed. And Dr. Rickheim was so great and friendly! He took the time to introduce himself, get to know both of my kids, and their mom and me. He even noticed I was wearing an Alaska sweatshirt and asked about that. Then shared with us his connection to Alaska, just like we were long time friends of his, yet we had just met him. He thoughly explained what he saw during the examination (in simple terms I could understand, not confusing medical jargon) and what he felt was the best treatment plan. He answered all of our questions and you could tell he genuinely cared about what was best for my kids treatment. Because of that, we signed up right then. And again, the office staff was great to work with, getting everything setup and getting the kids ready for their treatment process. Plus the office staff was able to accommodate setting up the financials so it was split between myself and the kids mom, which made things even easier for us. I have never seen any staff member who wasn't friendly or smiling and we have been in a couple times already. Peach Orthodontics is just great all around in my opinion and I definitely will tell anyone needing orthodontic care to go to them!

Types of Braces

There are several different types of braces available to choose from, depending on your preferences and needs. Clear braces are a popular choice for those looking for a more discreet option, as they are less noticeable on the teeth. Ceramic braces are another option that blend in with the color of your teeth, making them less noticeable. Lingual braces are placed on the back of the teeth, making them completely hidden from view. Self-ligating braces use a special mechanism to hold the archwire in place, reducing the need for elastic bands.

Invisible braces, such as Invisalign, are a popular choice for those looking for a more flexible and removable option. Traditional metal braces are still a common choice for many patients, as they are durable and effective in straightening teeth. Your orthodontist can help you determine which type of braces is best suited for your specific needs and goals.

Taking Care of Your Teeth with Braces

When wearing braces, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent any issues such as cavities or gum disease. Brush your teeth at least three times a day, making sure to clean around the brackets and wires of the braces. Flossing is also crucial, as it helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth. Avoid foods that are sticky, hard, or could get stuck in your braces to prevent damage or discomfort. Regular dental checkups are essential to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment.

If you experience any discomfort or pain from your braces, your orthodontist can provide you with tips and techniques to alleviate the discomfort. It is important to follow any instructions given by your orthodontist to ensure that your treatment progresses smoothly and effectively. By taking good care of your teeth and braces, you can achieve a straighter, healthier smile in no time.
